EXCLUSIVE Alan Sugar: ‘Fame-Hungry Candidates NEVER Last On The Apprentice’
It is safe to say that the two most famous people to come out of The Apprentice, other than Lord Alan Sugar of course, are Katie Hopkins and James Hill.
No, you’re right, neither of them did win.
In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, James’ profile sky-rocketed when he may or may not have been drafted into Celebrity Big Brother as Dan Osborne’s replacement, going on to win the blimmin’ show.
Katie, on the other hand, well, she’s forged a career out of being a controversial rent-a-gob, complete with stints on both I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and Celebrity Big Brother.
Quite impressive really.
Business tycoon Lord Sugar has made no secret of his disdain for candidates using his BBC show to kickstart their fifteen minutes of fame, but insisted at the launch of the new series of The Apprentice that you can spot the fame-hungry hopefuls a mile off.
The 68-year-old told us: “We do our best to try and recognise if they are in it for the celebrity at the very early stage. We look at their CVs and there are very in-depth investigations into who they are.
“So we do our best to try and deal with that at the selection stage. The first time that I see them is when I first walk into the boardroom, and in my opinion there may be some people that are there for the wrong reason, but they don’t last through the process.”
Erm, didn’t you offer a certain Ms. Hopkins a place in the semi-finals, Lord Sugar?
And when asked what he thought about James winning the latest series of CBB, the personality quipped: “Who’s he?”
BURN.
Lord Sugar, who has hosted The Apprentice for eleven years, also shared that the reason why his show does so well each year whereas shows such as The X Factor have seen dwindling audience figures is down to one thing and one thing only - a lack of gimmicks.
He explained: “The BBC, the production company, and myself aren’t interested in gimmicks and trying to change things - if it’s not broke don’t try and fix it.
“In my opinion, X Factor has shown that gimmicks don’t seem to work. Our formula is very simple, it’s the same and I’m the same - what’s not the same is the candidates and the candidates are the compelling viewing.”
When given the opportunity to give Simon Cowell some friendly advice, the businessman retorted: “Simon Cowell wouldn’t listen to me any way…
“… But he should get rid of the beard for a start.”
Ahh, Alan Sugar - it’s good to have you, and The Apprentice, back.
