EXCLUSIVE Nick Jonas: ‘Being Open About My Diabetes Battle Has Helped Me Cope’
Nick Jonas recently admitted that he has to be incredibly careful with his diet as he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes ten years ago and needs to take extra precautions in order stay healthy.
The star also opened up about a scary incident that saw him pass out in an elevator when his sugar levels suddenly dropped, and when we caught up with Nick at BBC Radio 1’s Teen Awards earlier today, he exclusively told us that speaking openly about his diabetes struggle has helped him learn how to cope with it.
When we asked the 23 year old what encouraged him to make the inspirational decision to speak out, Nick explained: “I think it’s incredibly important to be transparent about things like that.
"For me, it’s been helpful for me in my life to be open about it and share my story.
"I think if I was protective over the information it would make it harder to deal with on a day-to-day basis.”
And we are sure that fellow diabetes-sufferers across the globe couldn’t be happier to have such a vocal representative for the illness in the public eye.
Nick also told us that despite achieving international fame at an incredibly young age with his band ‘The Jonas Brothers’, he will never quite get used to the screaming fans.
He shared: “It’s definitely still crazy and bizarre, but it’s fun and the fans are so supportive.
"This show in particular is one of the loudest ones.”
And, as it is the Teen Awards, what advice would he give to his teenage fans?
“Take some deep breaths and try to enjoy your teenage years, because they go very quickly,” he told us, “It’s the times that you can laugh at yourself that make the best moments in life.”
Which, we have to admit, is some pretty solid advice all round.
